"Judgment Calls: Twelve Stories of Big Decisions and the Teams That Got Them Right" written by Thomas H. Davenport and Brook Manville, is published by Harvard Business Review Press.

Davenport holds the President’s Chair in Information Technology and Management at Babson College, and Manville is an independent consultant

The authors share 12 stories of organizations that have successfully tapped their data assets and knowledge to build an organizational decision-making capability, or organizational judgment. The organizations include The Vanguard Group, Tweezerman, Media General and McKinsey.

Davenport and Manville note four trends that define good organizational judgment:

- The recognition that none of us is as smart as all of us.

- Tapping not only the wisdom of the crowd but the leadership of the crowd.

- The use of analytics to support and sometimes actually make decisions.

- Information technology is an enabler of the first three aspects.

According to one reviewer, "Judgment Calls makes a strong effort to raise decision making into less of an individual basis and more of a cultural practice within a team."
